Weekly Report 8/4/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Apr 08, 2011 12:09 pm

Estuary: The past seven days have certainly bought some smiles to many anglers’ faces with the mulloway en masse off the breakwall. Baitfish, mainly herring, are feeding the jew and are also massing with reports that schools as large as the width of the channel are common. Reports of jewfish around 65cm are common with some anglers releasing fish every few minutes as bag limits (5) are reached with ease. Common baits are, of course, live herring but 7” Gulp soft plastics are catching equally as many fish. It seems that the Flathead are slowly fading away for winter recess with only a few reports this week of nice plate size fish being caught, however the Bream now are the catch of the day. Nice Bream being caught on unweighted flesh baits are common around the leases and up the rivers. Blackfish have started to school in amongst the lake with a couple of reports early in the week of nice fish being landed behind the Black boat along the breakwall.
Rock: A few spies have let me know that xtra large Tailor have been a common catch along the stones near McBrides Beach. Longtail Tuna have been caught off Flat Rock but be mindful of the Toothy critters amongst them. Last Sunday we had a viewing in store of the remaining part of a large Longtail that was hit on the surface by a large shark – only the head was caught! Reports of good size Kings off Shelly’s.
Offshore: Plenty of good size Bonito are being caught everywhere – some fish are measuring in excess of 500mm! Trag and Jew are common at the 22m mark after dark. Still plenty of plate size snapper around at most of the reef marks.
Beach: Anglers are experiencing great beach fishing at the moment with plenty of Tailor filling the gutters. Bream have been plentiful along the gutters plus around the ends of Seven Mile near Janies corner.
Those visiting us over the School Holidays we will be open every day from 8.00am till 5.00pm for all your fishing and camping needs. And if boating on the lake or offshore please remember your PFD requirements plus your boat ramp etiquette on launching and retrieval.
