Weekly Report 13/5/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 13, 2011 4:04 pm

Estuary: Tuncurry Breakwall is firing well with the luderick arriving en masse. Anglers are walking away after 45 minutes with their bag limits. The fish are schooling in the eddies and the pick of the baits is wire weed, which seems to be having more success than cabbage. Mullet are also in masses with fish up to 1.5kg common. Joel Gray fished the bridge pylons on Thursday for six nice bream around 35cm, while Greg & Lesley Kellaher fished The Paddock and caught over 40 bream (just undersize) in two hours but managed to take home 5 healthy fish around 600g. Greg reports that Kokoda Semi Circle Hooks 1/0 – 3/0 with a strip of striped tuna were the winning combination.
Rocks: A few reports from the spearos that all fishable rock ledges have large groper present at the moment. Black crabs, cunje or sea urchins are the best baits to chase these fish with some good strong gear – hang on as these fish will dive for cover. Large bonito have been spun up along The Tanks along with a few tailor.
Offshore: One good report of quality snapper up north in about 15m of water before sunrise. No other reports other than a few cobia and kings being landed by the commercial guys.
Beach: Beaches are full of extra- large salmon again. Great fighters, but not really delicious table fare. Still a few tailor off Tuncurry Beach up towards the tip. Quality whiting down in the corner off Elizabeth and right up as far as the back of Tiona. One lone report of a few bream off Janies Corner.
