Weekly Report 26/8/11

Estuary: After reporting last week that the lake had cleared up I can now report that it looks like a swamp as a result of all the rain again! However, get up early and fish the run-out tide over the next few days, in particular the leases just up from the bridge, for some great results. The bream are still in abundance and will bite on any type of strip bait such as mullet or slimy fillets – berley up hard and they will come on. A few reports of good fishing around the channel in the deeper water near the back of Barclays Oysters. This area is loaded with bream and a few juvenile snapper have been landed as well. The time of the year is upon us when a few mulloway could be lurking off the breakwalls on the first of the run-out tide. Still plenty of blackfish along the breakwall.
Rocks: The drummer are firing and are the pick of the fishing at the moment, subject to the size of the swell. Plenty of good quality and very fat blackfish have been caught near Boomerang Beach with some over 1.5kg.
Offshore: Last Friday was the last day that I heard of any boats venturing out to sea. A few anglers hit the reefs for the usual leatherjackets along with some rat kingfish and some smaller than usual snapper – although they are good plate size. Out wide a few tuna and a striped marlin were sighted in water pushing 20°. With the inclement weather and strong SE winds the rest of this week has been a waste of time.
Beach: Very sloppy with the prevailing SE winds. The tides have been OK for beach fishing but it seems that only salmon are being caught. Thursday afternoon saw a few guys land some bream off Janies Corner but other than those few, nothing else was landed.
