Weekly Report 16/9/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Sep 16, 2011 4:29 pm

Estuary: Anglers are still happy with lake conditions with mixed species of bream, flathead, blackfish and the start of garfish all common catches this week. Flathead are still in strong numbers but the recent cold snap has kept them a little timid over the last few days. Those that have been targeting flathead have been rewarded with quality fish around 50-60cm. Joel Gray fished the breakwall near Tuncurry Bridge for 6 good fish on 70mm Squidgy Fish. Blackfish are still thick all along the breakwall on Tuncurry side plus right around near Boatland Marine and Point Road. Bream are going crazy! The release of the new Ecogear bream soft plastics has put them into a feeding frenzy. Those that have not used these yet, grab a bag – you will be surprised how well they work. I tested these from the shoreline near the back of Wallamba Caravan Park on sunset on Wednesday night for 4 Bream around 27cm.
Rocks: Good reports of nice size drummer off Bennetts Head. Plenty of small tailor near The Tanks on metal spinners.
Offshore: Reds to 2kg common on most reefs. Good catches especially on the reefs near Blackhead. Leatherjackets are still hanging around but not in the numbers that we have been experiencing, but the fish being caught are still a good size. Plenty of mako sharks are lurking around with reports of them attacking catches up on the surface. Out wide on the shelf on the 240ft mark a number of customers have landed bar cod over the last week.
Beach: Only the odd tailor being caught at the back of Tuncurry Tip with salmon still around on most beaches. Treachery Camping Ground reports that large jewfish are common on Treachery Beach. A few guys landed good bream on mullet strips around Janies corner.
