Weekly Report 23/9/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Sep 23, 2011 3:38 pm

Estuary: Wallis Island drop-offs are fishing well for flathead from mid-40cm to high 60cm. All areas from the airport jetty down to The Step are producing quality fish. Soft plastics in the minnow or squidgy fish style are working best, on a slow retrieve. The water is still a bit cold and the flathead are a little slow to attack their prey so a slow retrieve wins. The trumpeter whiting have arrived down the back of the lake. Cooked prawns or a Gulp 2” Worm on a No 6 long-shank hook will get results. Good reports of plenty of garfish among the whiting.
Bream are still biting with the new Ecogear soft plastics the new gun lures. Rigged on a TT Hidden Weight they are dynamite. Striped tuna fillets or cooked prawns are working well, unweighted or with a small ball sinker. The channel behind Barclay’s Oysters is a popular spot at the moment.
Rock: Oversized drummer are common in all areas from Bennetts Head down to as far south as Boomerang shoreline. Charlottes Head has good blackfish and quality bream with some reports of fish over 40cm. Flat Rock is fishing better than normal. The pick of the baits here is large royal red prawns – bait up and hang on is the word!
Offshore: Scattered reports this week, but still plenty of medium-sized snapper around the reefs from Blackhead up to Crowdy and near Elsie’s. Multi hook-ups of flathead in close at The Barge. Still plenty of leatherjackets around.
Beach: Mainly salmon on most beaches. A few reports of tailor along Seven Mile near Tiona. Big whiting off Blueys and Elizabeth beaches.
A gentle reminder to all those who will be visiting our area for the school holidays about boat ramp etiquette. The ramps will be busy so please be patient.
Prepare your boat prior to launching; this will make everyone’s day enjoyable.
We have some good spring specials in store at the moment for those anglers in the market for some new gear for summer – call in and say hi.
