Weekly Report 21/10/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:43 pm

Estuary: A great week in the lake and the rivers, with flathead on the bite everywhere. The Coolongoolook, Wang Wauk and Wallamba rivers are fishing well with flathead biting on Squidgy Fish 70mm in black/gold and Gary Glitter on 1/8oz jig heads. Bream are still as strong with The Paddock producing great results – again only on soft plastics and small jig heads. It seems that hardbodies are not working at the moment but Jitterbugs cast along the banks of the Wallamba up near Nabiac have produced some nice bass, but only when the river levels are down. A few more days/weeks of dry weather will get the bass fired up more as the fresh water levels subside.
The lake has started with fire well with some good reports of whiting in the deep near Wallis Island and Hells Gate. A 2” Gulp Sandworm in camo colour or a live sandworm will work. Still a few blackfish along the breakwall and up off Boatland Marine.
Rock: A few reports in late in the week of some nice groper still happy to take a crab or a royal red prawn. Small kings taking metal spinners around The Tanks.
Offshore: Good one day and bad the next is what I have heard. Mixed reports with some anglers doing well on snapper, trag and pearl perch while others are filling their bags with only rock cod and small nannygai. No reports from out wide.
Beach: Beaches are working well with some good gutters along Tuncurry Beach. Quality bream over 40cm have been common on the northern end of Tuncurry. Diamond Beach is also working well after dark with small soapie jew common. Salmon are still there in numbers but tailor remain scarce.
Last weekend on Wallis Lake one of my very regular customers and friends was involved in a tragic boating accident. Can I remind all anglers to wear your outboard motor kill cord (and PFD if required) while under way and please travel safe on our waterways in all conditions. Our deepest get-well wishes go out to Greg & Lesley for a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing you both back home soon.
