Weekly Report 11/11/11

Estuary: The prawn dark will be under way within the next week with plenty of prawns on the move for everyone. Remember that Wallis Lake has greasyback prawns and only a cotton prawn net will get results – nylon netting will allow the prawns to slip through. We have cotton prawn scoop nets in stock plus replacement netting if required. The breakwall over the past 48 hours has produced some big mulloway, with a few stories coming in of the 'one that got away'. 7” Gulp plastics have accounted for most of these fish, but live bait is producing as well. The flathead and whiting has been outstanding and with prawns ready to run, this will ensure a fish of some description with every bait put in the water. Poppers have rewarded whiting fishers. Green Point along the flats has produced whiting to 40cm, The Step is loaded with good size trumpeters. At Breckenridge Channel you will land plenty of good flathead with some females over 80cm lazing on the bottom this week. Blue swimmer and mud crabs have started and this week’s moon should bring them on stronger.
Rocks: Not much to report other than Janies Corner is fishing the best with good bream and the odd tailor.
Offshore: One good report of some large kingfish at the FAD early in the week. These fish were caught on live slimy mackerel. Reefs are still producing good snapper plus the dreaded red rock cod. Plenty of flathead on the sandy gravel.
Beach: Diamond Beach seems to be the pick at the moment. Mulloway, bream and whiting are all common. Seven Mile (northern end) has some good bream and small tailor, with the emphasis on the small.
