Weekly Report 6/1/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 06, 2012 3:59 pm

Estuary: Wallis Lake has been the jewel of anglers over the past week with whiting and flathead in numbers one could scarcely imagine. Anglers chasing whiting can have a bag limit (20) in two hours or less and can catch these tasty fish on lures or bait. Poppers and soft plastics will work, with my suggestions a Bassday Sugapen, Stiffy Popper FRV, Atomic Pop 50, Gulp 2” camo Sandworm or a Squidgie Wriggler. A live or preserved beachworm or a cooked prawn will also get results. Areas such as The Step, sandflats near the bridge or the back or Tern Island under the wires are good. Flathead are stacked up with the Breckenridge Channel working well on the run-out tide, the shoreline of Godwin Island and in close along the back of Tern Island good for all. Large flathead along the Tuncurry breakwall, along with plenty of mulloway on both sides.
Crabs are making their way to many tables each night at the moment with the best report of one local and his family trapping 33 mud crabs down the back edges of the Lake since Boxing Day. Blue swimmers are being caught along the grass beds near Green Point and the back of the Sailing Club plus some good reports from Coomba Park as well.
Rock: The weather has kept rockhoppers in bed so no reports.
Offshore: A few scattered reports from locals and holidaymakers of good fish being caught in close. The common spots such as The Barge and Ballast are firing for flathead and small reef fish. Out wide at the FAD good reports of kingfish around 80cm, mahi mahi to 1m plus a few yellowfin tuna early in the week. Small skirted lures seem to be working best, but quite a few guys have been out trying their hand at jigging but to date no feedback.
Beach: Mixed reports of dart and bream along the two town beaches. In tight at Janies Corner a few tailor were landed on Wednesday afternoon, while the pick is Diamond Beach, where anglers are getting mulloway. Four reports in five days of fish around 10-15kg have been caught after dark on ganged pillies and live bait.
Will be open every day over the holiday period from 8am until late.
