Weekly Report 13/1/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 13, 2012 12:44 pm

Estuary: The mulloway fishing from the breakwalls has given most anglers a fish or two on the run-out tide. Live baits or whole California squid have been the pick of the baits, while 9” soft plastics will work just as well. The flathead and whiting throughout the lake are still there in excellent numbers. Bait fishos are hitting the jackpot using Hawkesbury prawns whilst any style of soft plastic will get the flathead. Whiting are taking live beach worms or a cooked prawn along with the standard popper on the surface for the lure guys. Some good bream captures have been reported along the leases, but one day they are there and the next day they are gone.
Rock: Several big snapper and a few kings have been taken from rocks in the Pacific Palms and Seal Rocks areas after the seas calmed down. A few drummer are also around Charlottes Head for those that want to trek in .
Offshore: The big seas from last week have died down and in close bonito can be found. The FAD is firing well with good reports of quality mahi mahi up to 1.2m along with good-sized kingfish. I have received a few disturbing reports from anglers who have reported that others are not sticking to protocol around the FAD. Some boats are hitting the FAD, others cutting off others’ lures with their props while others are putting wash up within 5m of the FAD. Guys, please remember a little bit of courtesy around the FAD – coming in close enough to hit it will only send the fish away. The reefs are producing small reds, XL pearlies and trag. Greg Horan fished in close early in the week and came home with a good box of pearlies of 2.5kg – 4kg.
Beach: A few tailor along Nine Mile plus 40cm-plus whiting on the beach at the back of Tuncurry Tip. Dart and bream along Seven Mile around Tiona. Not many other notable reports from the beaches this week
