Weekly Report 20/1/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 20, 2012 4:42 pm

Estuary: Holidaymakers and locals are certainly enjoying the benefits of the outstanding Wallis Lake. The lake is overflowing with fish – whiting on poppers and live worms – flathead on plastics – bream on Hawkesbury prawns and mulloway taking plastics and live bait.
Many reports of whiting on most sand flats taking poppers and surface stickbaits. Live beach worms (or preserved) will get results too. Flathead are stacked on the bottom with the Breckenridge Channel and the south side of Tern Island the best spots at the moment. Bream are still around in good numbers with a few reports of fish around 1.5kg caught on the top of the tide in the oyster racks or along the shoreline of the Wallamba River. With the prawn run now on til next Monday the fish are all in a feeding frenzy. The locals tell me that the prawns up the Wallamba River are sucking along the shoreline, so get those baits or small lures in close along the banks. Remember that the new moon is on January 23 so that will just about pull up the prawn dark. Get out there with a cotton landing net, good light and the run-out tide for a feed of prawns. Crabs are still on in good numbers.
Rock: Other than a few guys fishing Janies Corner for tailor I do not have much to report this week.
Offshore: Conditions outside have been on our side this week with a few guys heading north for a good box of reds and morwong. Large nannygai were around the Blackhead Reef early in the week. The normal spots out the front will get results for those that are happy for some good flathead and a few leatherjackets.
Beach: Good tailor along Nine Mile up the northern end down to the Tip. Quality bream on One Mile in the gutters on mullet strips or large Hawkesbury prawns. A few school jew down near Seal Rocks and out the back of Treachery Camp.
