Weekly Report 10/2/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 10, 2012 2:42 pm

Estuary: After another week of floods and torrential rain each run-out tide continues to draw dirty water out of the rivers, concentrating the fish in the lower parts of the system. Bream are popular as ever with good catches among the oyster racks. Fish up to 1.5kg have been landed on soft plastics on a Hidden Weight jig head or unweighted baits such as mullet gut or mullet strips. If you want to chase bream out in the open water, work the transition between the dirty and cleaner run-in tide water as it moves up the lake. Flathead have been in big numbers in Breckenridge Channel and along the bridge breakwall, Tuncurry side. Rock: Only one report this week – Bennetts Head and Latitude Rock are amass with bonito in close for those that want to spin.
Offshore: Mahi mahi remain in big numbers out wide at the FAD, although trying to get past the rats is a problem. Kingfish, although small, are everywhere, as are bonito and slimy mackerel around Cape Hawke and Latitude Rock. Reef fishing reports have been good if you want to head north.
Beach: Several locals have reported the number of quality gutters along Tuncurry Beach all full of big whiting. Fish up to 45cm are common and are as close as right behind the caravan park in Tuncurry. A few tailor and bream have been taken in this area as well. Mulloway are there but you must work for them. Best results this week for the Jew have been Diamond Beach and Old Bar Beach.
