Weekly Report 2/3/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 02, 2012 2:52 pm

Estuary: Reports of great fishing have come through from my regulars who live down at Smiths Lake. Nice flathead and whiting are common with the majority of fish caught on soft plastics along the flats on the run-out tide. The main lake is still healthy with whiting common under the bridge on the Tuncurry side. Top of the tide each day has produced some good bream around 1kg-1.5kg among the racks. Surface lures are getting best results here. The breakwall is again firing well with mulloway massed. 7” Gulps or 9” Panther Martin lures are working well and live bait will always get results. I have heard of fish from 6kg to 12kg this week.
Rock: A few groper have been lurking around the rocks and have been happy to take crabs as baits. LBG boys are still trying hard and a few have landed good kings and plenty of toothy critters have been causing havoc. Many anglers are retrieving heads only, with some also hooking up mainly on juvenile hammerheads.
Offshore: A little quieter this week but out wide the fish are still biting. Good catches of trag are common, plus snapper to 4kg are plentiful on the reefs north. The FAD is producing small mahi mahi while the guys trolling small skirts are getting yellowfin and a few mack tuna.
Beach: Tailor reports are getting better as each day goes past. Some good greenbacks have started to come in close among the smaller fish. Wobbegong sharks (must be released) are common as are small bronze whalers off Diamond Beach. Bronzies in batter or egg and breadcrumbs make a delicious meal. A few good fat whiting are still around the southern beaches taking beachworms with bream still there to make the day all worthwhile.
