Weekly Report 23/4/12

Estuary: Who said bad weather stops fish biting? The lake is sensational at the moment for those that like chasing bream. The Paddock on the top of the tide is producing bream over 40cm and plenty of them. OK the trick – a bit of berley, no weight or very little if there is a bit of current, and good baits such as mullet gut, Hawkesbury prawns or bread moulded onto your hook. Float it down the berley trail and hang on! Working a hardbody or a vibe will work as well. Whiting have come back and are on the bite under The Wires, only small but still legal. Mulloway are plentiful along the breakwall and are happy to take a soft plastic or live yakkas – last 2hrs of the run out works the best. A few flathead are in the Breckenridge Channel and will take whitebait on the drift or as always will chase a soft plastic or hard body lure.
Rock: No reports this week. Simply a bad week for rock fishing with big swell and seas.
Offshore: Visitors Phil & Dave Nash fished hard on Wednesday and were rewarded with a good box of flathead plus a bonus cobia (1.45m) fishing near The Ballast with live yakkas. Other reports were common with small – medium snapper, trag plus large nannygai common box-fillers.
Beach: Good reports from Janies Corner for quality large bream and 40cm-plus Whiting. Move 300m south down from Janies to get the best formations. Anglers are leaving the area with fish still on the bite. The back of The Pines is fishing well for salmon. Tuncurry Beach half-way up to the tip (back of Browns Track) is firing well most mornings on sunrise for tailor to around 2kg.
