Weekly Report 27/7/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jul 27, 2012 11:35 am

After a few weeks in the Top End chasing barra and saratoga and soaking up 30° days, I am back to reality.
Estuary: The blackfish have arrived in good numbers with fish up to 40cm being landed among the oyster racks. Breckenridge Channel near Paradise Marina is also producing quality blackfish along the baths wall. Bream are still here although they have thinned out a bit. Working structure is getting the best results with very light rigs and using mullet gut as bait. The odd sprinkle of Ultrabite berley on the surface once in a while keeps them interested as well. Funnily enough, a few flathead have started to be caught on the flats on the run out tide with reports of fish over 60cm common. 70mm Squidgy Fish in drop bear colour are working a treat.
Rocks: Dave Seaman & Co have worked the rocks from town down to Cape Hawke over the past week with outstanding results. Drummer up to 3.5kg, groper to 10kg and silver trevally around 2kg have given them heaps of fun. Dave recommends prawns or crabs as bait and berley of bread. Bream are also feeding along most shorelines with fish all around 30-35cm and up to 1.3kg common.
Offshore: Plenty of good reef fish up off Blackhead in the shallows including morwong and small snapper. Out wide good mixed boxes of samson fish, kings and plenty of flathead on the gravel beds. Leatherjackets are there for taking, just remember a good wire trace or be prepared to lose plenty of gear. A few boats have also reported gummy sharks.
Beach: Small Jewfish (45-50cm) are being landed along Diamond Beach plus plenty of Salmon to 3kg along all beaches. Good bream around a kilo happily taking mackerel strips or pilchard strips.
