Weekly Report 10/8/12

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:50 am

Estuary: A bit of a ho-hum week with big winds and very cold mornings have kept most anglers inside. Those that braved the weather have caught fair bags of fish. Luderick are plentiful along the breakwall and near Point Road. The Paddock is firing well still with good-sized luderick and a bit of berley and some light gear will get the bream’s attention. Further upstream in the Wallamba River around the back of the Tuncurry Resort a few guys flicking soft plastics along the shoreline have been rewarded with quality flathead up to 60cm.
Rock: Still big drummer and groper. Blue groper the size of garbage bags are common and will fight hard. Plenty of big fish around 4-5kg (one went 10kg) are being landed but they are not to flash to eat and should be thrown back. Stick to the smaller fish if you are chasing a feed. Still a few silver trevally and 40cm bream in the washes feeding on the excess food the big seas have created.
Offshore: I am sad to say leatherjackets will be the fish to catch over the next few weeks. Reports indicate they will ‘pyramid’ up to your bait about 2m below your boat. So rig up and catch these tasty morsels or go home busted off each drop. Plenty of baitfish around with a few guys getting slimies near The Tanks, while the end of the Forster Breakwall has had a patch of yakkas there for a few days.
Beach: The rough seas should have started to form some good ground along all beaches. Janies Corner is full of whiting around the mid-30cm mark, while further down Seven Mile Beach school jew have been around. Sport fishos using light gear will have fun on the massive schools of salmon. Double hook-ups of salmon are common for those using a paternoster rig down at Elizabeth Beach.
