Weekly Report 24/8/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:53 pm

Estuary: The weather certainly fined up and the fish fired this week. Bream have been in a feeding frenzy along the breakwall near the Co-op and have been happy to take mullet or chicken gut bait. Problem lies with the tide running fast along the wall, so rig according to the tide but fish as light as you can. Further in the lake a few tailor have been getting around along the back of Tern Island while reports are that good flathead have been lazing along the bottom along the Breckenridge Channel. Second-hand reports of leatherjackets near The Step along the back edge of the last oyster lease.
Rock: Again my resident rockhopper reports that drummer are thick and are common around 5kg. Silver trevally are being landed along Bennetts Head, while most rock ledges are loaded with groper.
Offshore: Not a lot of outside reports other than out wide bar cod are being caught by those who want to head out far. In closer off Crowdy Paul Johnson fished Monday morning for a snapper weighing 7.32kg and measuring 900mm. Paul reported that plenty of smaller ones were among the catch.
Beach: Still a mile of salmon with tailor starting to run but not in great numbers. Eddie Callaghan and Jim Montrose from Newcastle fished Tuncurry Beach on Tuesday morning on the run-up tide for a good bag of bream on pilchard fillets coated in Ultrabite juice. Best bream was 34cm and 1.12kg cleaned. A few reports of the odd medium jew being caught at the back of Lanis at Old Bar beach.
