Weekly Report 17/1/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 18, 2013 2:09 pm

Estuary: Whiting are everywhere with some anglers getting a bag limit before breakfast! Get out early and fish a Gulp plastic or try the flats with a surface popper. Flathead are continuing to fill anglers’ tubs. Fish around 50cm are very common and will happily take a bait such as a Hawkesbury prawn or most soft plastics such as fish or minnows. I have seen a photo this week of a 1.25m flathead caught near Barclays on Wednesday. She was released unharmed. Those land-based should try the end of Taree Street and boaters should fish the island drop-offs on the last two hours of the run-out tide. Crabbers are happily coming home with plenty of muddies whilst blue swimmers are everywhere on the sandy bottom. A few locals who went for a snorkel along the wall this week reported that there were plenty of fish all the way back to the bridge, with flathead en masse.
Rock: Bream and small snapper have been caught near Burgess Beach, while closer to town spearos have been getting a few small kings at The Tanks. Plenty of baitfish near The Tanks. Bennetts Head has had a few jewfish.
Offshore: Still plenty of marlin out wide in the warm water which has topped 26° some days. Trag are plentiful at night, while day anglers are still getting good mixed boxes of flathead, sambos and good snapper with reports of fish up to 6kg.
Beach: Jewfish are common on most southern beaches with fish over 1m common. Try the beaches after dark and use live bait or a whole squid for best results. Good bream among the jew with a few 50cm fish caught on Thursday night. Tuncurry Beach near to town has had a few dart and whiting late afternoon through to dark.
