Weekly Report 8/2/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 08, 2013 2:49 pm

Estuary: Wallis lake is starting to resemble its old self again, with the muddy water gradually receding and escaping to sea. The week has produced good catches of flathead on the flats during the run-out tide and only today (Fri) whiting have returned in good numbers. This week has also seen the start of another prawn run and a 9-litre bucket full is not uncommon each night. Blue swimmer crabs are also in abundance at night and are frequently being scooped up along with the prawns. Tuncurry Breakwall is also firing for jewfish around 8kg, with report of an 18kg fish caught on Thursday night. The smaller fish are being caught on soft plastics.
Rocks: A few reports early in the week of some good bream along most rocky shorelines feeding on cunjevoi after the big winds. Try early morning for the best results. A few bonnies have started to show up along with small tailor.
Offshore: No reports this week.
Beach: Beach is starting to repair itself after a fortnight of nor’-east winds and seas. Early reports have started to trickle in of the odd tailor. Still good-sized whiting caught off Seven Mile, while my regular jewfish anglers are getting a feed on all beaches from Crowdy Head to as far south as Treachery.
The report of the week has to be the large fish caught up in commercial prawner’s net on Wednesday night. The dark looming shape of a fish coming up in a prawn net in the Wallis Lake as the commercial netters were going about their job. The guys were happy land a 1.2m 14kg saltwater barramundi. So you just never know what the beautiful Wallis Lake will produce.
