Weekly Report 3/5/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 03, 2013 2:55 pm

Estuary: It seems the flathead have left the lake and moved higher up into the river system for the cooler months. Still some good flatties around 50cm being caught in the river. The lake at the moment is loaded with bream with many anglers landing ‘their biggest bream’ over the last week or so. Reports of fish in the high 30cm are very common with fish up to 47cm this week also being caught. Most reports are that the fish will bite on the top of the tide and will take a bait on an unweighted line or a plastic on a hidden weight jig head cast in among the racks. Early in the week the mullet had overtaken the lake with anglers chasing luderick having trouble getting through the schools of mullet. The westerly winds later in the week has certainly thinned them out and pushed them out onto the beaches. Luderick are moving around with Jim Freeman and Paul Clark working the leases most mornings for good quality fish up to 30cm. Large fantail leatherjackets are there and will take peeled prawns.
Rock: Many species are being caught at the moment off most rocky shorelines. Bennetts Head is fishing well with tailor, bonnies and the odd king taking metal lures. Big bronze luderick are the pick at the moment and will take prawns if you can’t get cabbage, with night fishing best. Bream are amongst them so you should be guaranteed a feed.
Offshore: A few guys have ventured out to the FAD and got smallish mahi mahi some days while others have headed out for nothing. Down south off Celito trag are around at night. Plenty of smaller reds off most reefs, while pearl perch around 40cm are around.
Beach: Beaches are a bit off and on at the moment. A few reports of jew off Seven Mile on beachworms balled up on your hook. Whole squid will work as well. Back Beach on the northern end of Nine Mile is full of XOS tailor with fish as big as 80cm/4.5kg caught. Four local Blackhead guys landed 33 tailor all over 40cm in an hour on Thursday afternoon, all on Samaki Flash spinners.
