Weekly Report 24/5/13

Estuary: Plenty of fishos have been out on the lake having a go for bream, blackfish and leatherjackets with some pretty good results. Yak fishos are getting big bream with most fish being caught on bait. The water temp is still up a bit for this time of year and a few flathead are still regular by-catch for those chasing bream. There are still some reasonable numbers of big mullet in the lake, however the westerlies this week should have swept them out on the beaches. With a bit of patience the mullet can be targeted using bread as bait and Arrowroot biscuits for surface berley. Those chasing bream on lures have reported mixed results, although last weekend the Betts Bream comp saw some pleasing results. Rarely do I get a report, but Smiths Lake has been fishing well for both a few good flathead in the shallows and bream in the weed beds.
Rock: There are some quality blackfish and bream along the rocky shores as are plenty of drummer. The calm conditions early in the week can make these fish a bit flighty and several rock boys have told me that a lot of their favourite holes are sanded up and hard to fish. However, after the last two days with the east coast low moving through, this may well clean the holes up.
Offshore: A bit quiet this week but a few snapper around Latitude Rock and up off Blackhead in the shallow water around 15m. Soft plastics in relatively shallow water are out-fishing those using snapper baits. I've had reports of bonito around headlands as well as heaps of trag on reefs after dark. A few big kingfish around with most fish lost on the surface.
Beach: The season seems to be running a little late and we are still waiting for good schools of mullet to move up the coast. With these come bream so these should be targeted if beach fishing. The best reports on tailor have come from areas to our north around Old Bar with Harry Loreton, 11, landing a 6kg tailor last week whilst fishing for jew with his Dad .
