Weekly Report 13/9/13

Estuary: Transition is happening in Wallis Lake at the moment with the bream slowly moving away and the flathead and whiting taking up residence. Trumpeter whiting are schooling up around The Step with most anglers getting close to a bag limit this week early each morning. Flathead are there but so far only in small numbers but the quality of the fish being caught is excellent. Blackfish are in big numbers among the racks, while whatever bream are left are starting to take surface lures. Reports are that a few prawns are starting to skip the surface at night so get those nets ready. The last weekend of September will be the prawn dark with a run-out tide through til around 11pm.
Rock: Still good feedback from anglers fishing Janies Corner with good-sized bream and tailor being landed on pilchards. Further south near Flat Rock I am told that a few kingfish are taking 65g metal lures.
Offshore: The 30m mark is loaded with small reds with double hook-ups common. Among these smaller fish there has been a few good size 6-7kg reds also caught. Leatherjackets are still hanging around while The Barge is starting to fish well for flathead.
Beach: A bit quiet this week on the beach. Jewfish are there each night while other species in small numbers. A few good-sized tailor have been taken on the very northern end of Nine Mile late in the afternoon.
