Weekly Report 20/9/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Sep 20, 2013 3:13 pm

Estuary: The bream have started to slow down a little this week to what we have been used to. But anglers are not complaining, with flathead being very active over the past week chasing soft plastics and bait. The new Live Shrimp plastic is going off and the bait guys can’t go past the traditional whitebait. Trumpeter whiting have started to move around closer up the lake and have been caught in good numbers around Hells Gate. A few guys have reported that they are also taking small poppers on the flats near Green Point. Back on flatties – many reports have been received of fish to 50cm around the islands with the run between Tern Island and Cockatoo Island proving to be the pick. Some fish have been caught very close to the shore in a mere 2’ of water. Blackfish still on the bite on Tern Island shore plus the breakwalls.
Rock: A few big groper still lurking around around Burgess Beach rocks and will be enticed by black crabs for bait. A few reports also of trevally in schools along the rocks.
Offshore: Plate-size snapper are still around and are being caught close in about 25m of water. As the weeks warmer months get closer these guys will head into deeper waters so get out and grab a few now. Plenty of these are also being landed down south around Seal Rocks along with big bream up to 1kg are common. One report today from out wide on the shelf of nice bar cod up to about 8kg. The jackets seem to be moving on, which makes it easier to chase flathead. These are plentiful on the normal spots.
Beach: Still a bit quiet. What we need is a good gale to stir the water up – it is too clear! However guys spinning on the beaches are getting a few tailor and salmon before sunrise. A few bream are still being landed on beach worms or slimy mack fillets.
For those travelling to our area over the school holidays we will be open 7 days from 8am for all your fishing and camping requirements. Drive and boat safely!
