Report 01/08/14

Estuary: Fishing the breakwall late afternoon and into the night is paying dividends this week for those wanting a feed of bream. Baits such as Mullet Gut or flesh strips is working well fished light. Jewfish – some legal some not – are common and I am told that Plazo Jerk Minnows are working the best. Chopper tailor have been chasing metals along the shoreline near the Tuncurry Bridge. Further up in the Lake around near The Step a run of very large winter Whiting have given anglers a run. Small hard bodies have worked at times however local beach worms floated down will get results. Green Point shoreline in the weed beds is full of bream however most are rats and near to go back for another day.

Rock: Janies Corner is by far the most consistent spot at the moment. A few locals have hit the area most days this week and have reported that Blackfish are in good numbers and amongst these fish are some large 40cm plus fish. Bream will chase a Pilchard Fillet after being enticed by a burley mix. Other areas are slow and I think that the calm seas and water that is ‘aquarium’ clear is not helping.

Offshore: Gear up with wire because the leather Jackets are in plagues. I suppose the great thing is that these are a great table fish! They seem to be everywhere except in close along the shoreline. A few guys got amongst the Pearl Perch down towards Charlottes Head while the gravel straight off Forster still is producing good legal flatties.

Beach: The first good report of Salmon has come through last Saturday. Seven Mile beach was loaded with them with the reporter saying ’the breakers went black with them’. In reality it has been a bit hit and miss for Tailor this week with only a few fish being landed by the regular fishos.
