Report 21/1/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Jan 22, 2015 10:37 am

Estuary: The lake has loaded up again with Trumpter Whiting with a few locals grabbing their bag limits early morning. A few quality flathead are being lifted out around the back Tern Island and on the drift near Mosquito island using Live Shrimp Lures or a cube of Blue bait. A good report of a few Bass taking small hard bodies up near Nabiac above the weir. If you want to get away from the holiday crowds your best bet would be to try the Cooloongolook River – I am told that it is producing good catches of Bream on small plastics. Tuncurry & Forster Breakwalls are still rewarding anglers with good quality Jewfish between 15-20kg mark, dead Lunds squid baits are working or likewise a large soft plastic will get results. Crabs are still in big numbers with Blue Swimmers being the pick at the moment.
Rock: Not much feedback this week from rockhoppers. Any reports I have had are just a few Tailor and Bream from most of the regular fishing haunts.
Offshore: Plenty of reports from offshore with a few warm currents bring quality fish down the coast. On Strike Charters last weekend got amongst the Trag and Snapper with all anglers on board getting a feed. Peter also reported that flathead are stacked up on the gravel. On Strike also gave their customers some close up action last Sunday with two small Black Marlin chasing Pike up to the surface next to the boat. Further north Andrew Smart and his visiting mate Dereck Archbold got into the Snapper off Blackhead. They fished the 18 meter mark and ran a burley trail to land two Snapper both hitting the scales at 6kg plus. These fish added to the already 6 fish around the 2kg mark in the box. More reports are coming in that the FAD is still not firing so it may be worth staying in close to get a feed.
Beach: A little quite on the beaches this week. A few Whiting have been landed along Tuncurry Beach in the gutters while up near Farquer Inlet some good Jewfish have taken worm baits at night.
