Report 13/2/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:17 am

Estuary: Crabs have been a highlight of the past week, with alot of super reports of good catches. Mud Crabs up the Wallamba River near the back of the caravan park at Failford have produced some great catches as have within the oyster leases in Beaky Bay. Blue Swimmers on the flats in Pipers Bay and along the Green Point shoreline are plentiful – lets say 16 swimmers in one trap is a good catch!! The jewfish that were haunting the breakwall seem to have headed off on summer holidays however still a few smaller Jew are being caught on both the walls. Flathead remain in good numbers throughout the lower parts of the lake, along with some quality Sand Whiting sholling up along most off the flats taking beachworms for baits. A few cracker bream have been caught along the edges of the islands in the shallows taking very small Live Shrimp lures or a lightly weighted whole Hakesbury Prawn.
Rock: A few locals have been successful in targeting some large bream on cunjevoi while early in the week the Bonito came on the chew for those that were spinning metals. A few Drummer were taken near Burgess headland last Saturday morning.

Offshore: Schools of bonito seem to have started to take residence in the area and remain in the close by. At last some reports of smaller Mahi mahi being caught at the FAD on the drift. Plenty of Trag in about 30 metres if water and are being caught at day and night. The reefs are still producing mixed bags with small reds plentiful up north.

Beach: The beaches have started to produce a very small smattering of Tailor which is common for this time. The next few weeks should start to fire better with better quality fish. Bream and whiting are common at the moment on most beaches however I am told that Tuncurry Beach is producing better fish than other areas.
