5/5/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 05, 2006 9:05 am

Offshore: Great Lakes Game Fishing Club had an outing last Saturday with mixed results. Athaldo had six encounters with marlin but none stayed hooked up. Rivenge boated a small striped marlin and everyone else had a nice day out. In closer, the full range of pelagic activity continues but maybe a little slower than in recent weeks. Early in the week cobia were still in numbers at The Graveyard. Usually at this time of the year the Ballast Heap is also worth a go. Mahi mahi are still on the FAD. Mac tuna, kingfish, bonito and tailor are common off most headlands and Latitude Rock in particular. Evening fishing has seen the best captures of snapper and assorted reef species. Sharks are everywhere.
Beaches: At last some decent tailor activity. Earlier in the week those fishing Seven Mile Beach well after sunset encountered some big greenbacks. Bream are being caught but not in volumes. Some mullet continue to leave the lake system and head north. Targeting mulloway off the lower end of Nine Mile Beach could be worth a go.
Rocks: LBG action continues with still plenty of longtails, mac tuna and some cobia. Bream, tailor and drummer are worth chasing.
Estuary: The breakwalls are loaded with baitfish. Slimies, yakkas and herring are everywhere along with mullet still yet to run. As you would expect the mulloway fishing in this spot has been good. Leave the plastics at home and take a bait jig. Bream activity in the lake proper is yet to hit its straps but the best is yet to come. Small flathead are everywhere. Try for some tailor around the bridge pylons just on dark.
