Report 26/8/16

Estuary: The Estuary continues to produce some great fishing. The Bream are still about in good numbers and some fairly big fish have been taken this week, the biggest I have heard of was a fish caught on Tuesday that measured 53cm! The Luderick are still in plague proportions about the lower reaches of the system, Forster breakwall, ‘The Paddock’ and Breckenridge channel are all fishing well. Once again Flathead catches have been consistent during the week, so much so that the Bream fishermen are complaining about the amount of Flathead they are catching!

Rock: This bit of bad weather we have experienced over the last few days has been a blessing for the local rock fishermen. A bit of rough water is exactly what is needed to get things happening about the local washes. Drummer, Bream and Luderick love the wave action hitting the rocks as they dislodge tasty morsels like crabs, cunjevoi, cabbage weed, snails and small fish. Tailor also appreciate the extra wash as it provides them with the perfect place to ambush prey from!

Offshore: Last weekend started out windy, Saturday was a total write off but then Sunday settled into a magnificent day! I was lucky enough to head out on a Whale watching trip with the Amaroo Cruises gang and the sea was glassy calm. While there were fairly solid lumps and bumps out wide, inshore was great. There was an amazing amount of life out there with masses of bait which is a good sign for all of us fisher people! Those that snuck a fish in ended up with mixed results, it would seem as though the boats that headed north to the snapper grounds struggled to find any quality fish, while those that went east or south were rewarded with some great fish up to 8kg in size!

Beaches: Bream and Tailor continue to dominate catches along our beaches. Reports of small Mulloway have filtered through all week, mainly coming from the Old Bar/ Wallabi Point areas.

Have a great weekend.

Happy Fishing!
Luke Austin.
