30/6/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jun 30, 2006 11:41 am

Offshore: Those who have ventured wide have come home empty-handed. Time to put the lures away and start chopping up pillies for yellowfin. Several local are planning a trip out for bar cod but none of them seems to have actually put the plan into action. In closer the reefs after dark are loaded with trag. Small reds and some pearl perch are being taken as by-catch. As mentioned last week, leatherjackets are a major problem so you may as well fish for them.
Beaches: Salmon!
Rocks: The great run of rock fishing continues with drummer upwards of 15lb in the old money being reported. If you use hermit crab tails or cunje for drummer, the accidental capture of bream will make the day worthwhile. All headlands from Blackhead to Seal Rocks are fishing well.
Estuary: Huge bream, particularly on bait around the breakwalls, have been a feature of the last week. I have an unconfirmed report of a 2.5kg bream coming from the lake. If you don't like bream, the blackfish are well and truly on the bite but local green weed is hard to come by. Tailor and leatherjackets give you some alternative species to target.
