Report 28/7/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Aug 03, 2017 9:42 am

Estuary: What a wonderful week of weather we have had here in the glorious Great Lakes! While the mornings have been a little fresh, the days have been clear and warm, far from what is the norm for July! Bream remain the target for most fishermen and most have been enjoying a fair degree of success. One angler fished his favourite Oyster lease on Tuesday and commented that while he only managed 8 fish his smallest was 37cm! His technique is by far the most productive as far as bait fishing goes. He simply ties up to the outside of the lease and fishes unweighted baits back into the structure. Simple but very effective. Further up the estuary the lure aficionados are having some great fun fishing the weed beds and sand flats with hard bodied lures. Flathead continue to fill keeper nets which is great for this time of the year. While it is not unusual to have the odd lizard being caught during the cooler months, it is unusual that so many fishermen continue to target them specifically! Soft plastics in the 2.5-3” size range continue to work well, particularly in white or pearl, small metal blades have been the standout lure this week though with one angler managing 8 fish in one session with the smallest being 52cm! The deeper channels in the estuary are holding good numbers of Tailor at the moment which can be great fun on the light gear, especially with some of the fish being well over 50cm! Luderick continue to be a bit frustrating for the majority of fishermen, Forster breakwall and around the outside of the boat harbour are producing some good fish but they are still somewhat sporadic. The bridge is similar in that people can fish there one day and catch their bag limit only to return for hardly any fish at all.

Beaches: The local coastline was subjected to a fair bit of swell earlier in the week and it changed the beach formations dramatically. The spots that had been fishing really well previously are no longer there and a lot of anglers have struggled to find the fish this week. The fish are definitely there though. Tailor continue to be a worthy target, particularly early in the day. Don’t be scared to move about and literally test the water in every gutter until you find them. 7 Mile is still by far the best beach at the moment with some really nice water around the middle of the beach.

Rocks: The most recent swell that we experienced earlier in the week was a bit of a blessing for the local rock fishermen! For weeks the light westerlies and no swell have made it hard to find any good looking Drummer water. Those that fished the dying swell over Sunday and Monday reported some great bags of fish consisting of Drummer to 50cm, nice fat Bream and a lot of Luderick! Tailor are still prominent along the coast as well so it’s definitely worth dragging a lure or ganged Pilchard through the wash, you never know you might even run into a rogue Kingfish or Mulloway.

Offshore: The fishing offshore has been a little tougher over the past week. There are still good numbers of Snapper about, the bigger models seem to have moved on though with most fish being 2kg or under. Teraglin are still about in 45-60m, however so are the Leatherjackets! Unfortunately, it would seem that the annual run of Leatherjackets has well and truly kicked in, while they are great on the table, the amount of tackle that they destroy is nothing short of infuriating! If you happen to come across a mob of Jackets the best option is to simply pull up the anchor and move.
Have a great weekend, I will be away for next weeks’ report so the next report won’t be until the 11/8/17.

Happy Fishing!
Luke Austin.
