Report 25/8/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Aug 25, 2017 7:15 pm

Estuary: We have had a fairly unsettled week of weather here in the Great Lakes, however we were lucky enough to score a couple of absolutely stunning days’ mid-week. Fishing-wise things have remained fairly stable. There are still some great Bream getting around particularly for those who are happy to cover a bit of ground working lures over rock/oyster bars, weed beds and sand flats. Metal vibes are working a treat on schooling fish that have been sounded up in the deep; soft vibes or soft plastics with a decent bit of weight on them would probably achieve a similar outcome. The Luderick have only improved since last Friday, the strong winds that we experienced over the weekend really helped to ‘move them in’ and most anglers that have visited the Forster Breakwall over the past week have had some great catches. On a side note, if you do decide to target these fish and find them easy to catch PLEASE BE AWARE OF AND ADHERE TO YOUR BAG/POSSESSION LIMITS! I have been inundated with reports from people worried that a few anglers in particular (the same individuals, every day!) have been keeping a lot more than they should be! Flathead continue to impress also which is a promising sign of what will hopefully be a cracking summer season. While there haven’t been huge numbers caught there has been a lot of fish between 60 and 80cm.

Beaches: There have only been a few windows of opportunity to hit the local sand over the past week. Reports coming in have varied a fair bit. One lot of anglers had a great evening session on the Mulloway on a beach to the south, while there were no big fish caught, the bites were plentiful. The Tailor run seems to have really dried up now with only a spattering of mainly smaller fish hanging about.

Rocks: Reports from the stones have been few and far between this week. I would imagine the wash fishing has been fairly productive with the unsettled conditions we are experiencing. One angler has had a nice week chasing Mulloway off the rocks to the north of town, the best fish weighed in at a respectable 14kg.

Offshore: Conditions have not been the best for offshore fishing over the past week. Unfortunately, those that have ventured out have not found too much success. Snapper are fairly hit and miss at the moment and there are a lot of smaller fish being caught. The odd Pearl Perch is coming up, but again lacking somewhat in size. On a positive note, there are huge schools of small Slimy Mackerel hanging out in the deeper water which can only be a good sign of things to come at the water warms up in the coming months.

Enjoy your weekend, happy fishing!
Luke Austin.
