Report 30/7/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Wed Aug 02, 2017 1:57 pm

What weather on the bay in the last few days ,and with thousands of boats out it did not make any difference to the fishing, the squire and sweet lip were around the Lazaret gutter as was the most horrible and biggest stonefish I have ever caught on line ,followed by an octopus ,thank heavens managed two good fish and 4 nice arrow squid which visited the spotlight at the back of the boat.
Sunday morning after reading the last couple of year reports it was time to try the last of the outgoing tide in front of the lazaret for schoolies and there were plenty only two big fish but 12 undersize so I would think next few weeks that's where they will be.
The whiting were in big numbers in the small boat channel especially with the run in tide and very good quality,I think they must be ready to spawn as there roe is very large and watery compared to the last few weeks,(I take note because they are lovely to eat)..I know yuk but you need to taste them ..
The squid were there again in shallow water at the southern end of Green island and a couple were very large.
so a great week end..and as a final farewell i put the old alvey out for the squire session but after dropping the first big run i put it back in the boat, but the ratchet did sound good compared to the all new baitrunners that most of us have changed too.i suppose some of us oldys are like the alvey new and upgraded model take over... still love them.

Another glorious week end with plenty of boat enjoying the balmy days out on the water and plenty of jet skis going past moored boats showing us how fast they can go .oh well thats life what can you do at least most are thoughtful.
The fishing at the lazaret even with the incomming tide was ok got one nice fish of 55 plus and a couple of 35 just on legal and for the time and tide it was really good it glassed out completely on saturday afternoon, interesting for the first time i saw plenty of baby cuttlefish swimming on the surface at night ,netted a couple to take a photo and let the little fellas go could not bring myself to use them for bait.
The whiting are in big numbers in the small boat channel especially in the deep weed bank gutters i anchored up and caught as many as i wanted did not even drift ,it was good to see a few tiger squid and the bonus was a nice flounder(yummy)
The squid were again at the high tide at green island as were some squire but most were undersize.
Did not get a hit for a schoolie trolling from where ever i was travelling to which is probably the first time for a long time ,the times i trolled were not ideal but i would have thought a couple of hits were eventuate ,intresting a couple of friends told me they picked up a couple fishing deep with pillies so was thinking they might be sitting on the bottom at the momment..will have to try again and see when the weather allows..

Great day on the water a little breezy in the morning with the south/westerly but then glassed out till the south easterly started around 1pm.the whiting master had a great day it was hard to stop him filling his bucket with whiting ,(pitty he cant fillet as well but thats what i am there for ),from the small boat passage ,they were everywhere and nice quality till the change of the tide and the smaller fish came on,and some very aggressive tiger squid as well.

Had to go out to get some squid or cuttlefish today as my mate took the squid yesterday,so decided for some of the ugly ones (but taste even better then squid) and they were there in numbers 26 to 30 ft depth north east of green island ..and lucky they were there because i tried for tiger squid at the high tide mark at green and did not see one even come up to look..so cuttlefish paela and not squid doesnotmatter....
ps .on another note have not seen one of our friends of the blog for ages (curly one Jeff) hope all is ok maybe an email to see what you are up to and where you have been fishing..

Hoping to get out on Sunday Spero. In the deeper water for the squid, do you use a heavy jig or do you drift with one tied onto a paternoster rig?

i just use a ball sinker above the snap on swivel attached to the squid jig,i only use 10 to 12 lb line and once you hit bottom a couple of turns to have the jig a couple of feet of the bottom and what i find a jig up and down helps as they seem to grab it straight after a jig.i even had a couple yesterday follow up to the surface ..have fun and watch out for that dark dark black ink.

Wow the weather is unreal, and the fish are everywhere, the whiting were again all the way thru the small boat channel all the way up the rous to opposite firshermans gutter, even in horeshoe bay and the sandhills produced plenty,
the squire were again playing the game especially in the last of the outgoing tide on friday and saturday afternoon and one piece of advise and dont do what i did on saturday wich was not have the net tightened up so when i netted my lovely 60 cm plus snapper the net turned and i lost the fish,i have to apologise to the boats 2to 300 yds away who must have heard swearing at my self with everybad word i learnt growing up..
finally the school maclerel showed up in massive numbers in the shallow waters thru the the rous so lots of fun had by all.. and judging by the hundreds of 45 cm ones its going to be a great year ,i hope the leave some bait for the spotties to have in summer.moreton bay a great place to fish and looking at fun the little ones makenzie and kade with there dad shane catching schoolies on saturday were having how can you not like fishing.

Well it was only time till these winds hit ,and did they hit today some folk tried early but got caught out as the wind came with a roar and kept on picking up as the day progressed,so tackle and boat duties for the next week or so till the next break in the weather ,lucky we had our fair share of fresh fish over the last few weeks .but it will be good to get out there again, those undersize schoolies will be bigger and the whiting fatter..

Well the winds finally arrived and the fish had a chance to recover, for all chasing schoolies the good news is before the blow they came back thick like a few years back ,if you get a chance as the winds die down and the water clears after the winds turned it in to soup anywhere from the small boat channel thru to the 4 reds at the end of the rous and all the deeper gutters in between you should be getting a few schoolies either paravaning or floating out a pillie.i think its also time to start looking in the basin on the north ern side of peel and a longer trip to the sandhills and sharkspit is worth a try as well..

Gee if the schoolies were any thicker you could walk on them.only one problem 99% are under size .but lots of fun if you want practice on how to catch them with paravanes.and as you can see from the photo they did not care if you had spoons or 0range smith jigs they took everything ,it was so crazy i had the boat in gear going around in circles and was at the back catching and releasing one mackerel after another ..lots of fun and did manage 2 over 60 cm at least .
the whiting are also in plague proportions in the small boat channel as well.
and the 15 to 35 lb blue fins are thrashing on the surface east of green .a friend of the column caught one the other day and it took him 3 hours 20 min to land it ,,i am trying to organise photo wich i deleted by mistake...he was very very happy..

The school mackerel have really come to play and some of the fish today were 85 cm thats the biggest schoolies i have seen in the bay for more then 10 years and with the ammount of small ones around its going to be a great season all the way thru to summer,i hope the spotties find some food when they come in..
