Weekly Report 14 Mar 14

Post by Brad » Fri Mar 14, 2014 12:15 pm

Hello all CQ fishers and welcome to a beautiful weekend. We have a very short break of the continuous strong winds Saturday afternoon leading in to Sunday. The north trade winds have been relentless sweeping down the coast. I don’t have a great deal to report on due to the recent weather. However there are extremely good catches of Barra in the Fitzroy and Coorooman catchments. The Coorooman fish are mostly the better catches as they are a lot cleaner however some of the size of the fish coming from around the town reaches in Rocky are huge. The best bait for them at the moment is certainly perch.

The creeks around Rocky and Yeppoon have excellent supply’s making them easy to gather for a good session. Fishing the live perch or bony bream under a float on the low with about a metre of 80 pound trace linked to a 7/0 will do the trick. If you are fishing a moving tide, bottom fishing utilizing the previous rig adding a large running ball sinker removing the float is proving to be working well. Remember to have a stinger which is another hook the same size running lose above the fixed hook. The catchment rate is a lot higher giving you more chance to hook the powerful fish when they strike. The weather is only dropping out for a shot amount of time this weekend which will give you a chance to get out for a few hours to get amongst the blue water fish.

It has been a while since most could venture out which usually indicates a good trip. I will report back next week on where they were biting but, a couple of spots which normally produce after a decent blow are Conical, Outer rock and Baron. Trolling large lures or bottom fishing fresh fillets will come up trumps. Just remember to check your zoning maps with Outer rock as the green zone runs particularly close. If you would like some photos posted send them through to sustainblefishing@hotmail.com listed with where you caught them and any details you wish to add. Until next time happy fishing.
