Weekly Report 12 May 14

Post by Brad » Mon May 12, 2014 9:37 am

Hello all CQ fishers. Well this weekend the weather is good if you are a kite surfer. We have a fairly solid blow above 20knots starting today and has no end in sight. Last weekend seen a drop in the number of Barra being caught. This is due to the water temperature cooling down and the fish becoming far less active. Very neap tides seen a lot of people head down to the port or out to Corio. The smaller tides are good for Corio as the water rushes through at significant pace. Grunter have been the hot option lately with solid fish coming in from between Iron pot and double heads at night and Coorooman creek.

The biggest Banana prawns you can buy work excellent for Grunter. Blue salmon have been thick up at the head lands of Corio bay and there have been plenty of bait to keep them active. I have said it before but the best rig for the Blueys are a live mullet hooked with a 4/0 through the back of the tail on 2 feet of 40Lb mono with a small running ball sinker. As normal for our area the crabs have not showed and sign of slowing down for winter yet. Port Alma has them very abundant at the moment which has been aided by the flow in the Fitzroy. The fresh has pushed them out the front which means you don’t have to travel far to get a good feed. There will not be too many spots this weekend to stay clear from the wind, but if you do find a nice spot best of luck! If you would like some photos posted send them through to fishingcq@hotmail.com until next time happy fishing.

The tight Lines fishing classic is held in Yeppoon annually and has started the early bird entries. Get your entries in online or at a participating venues and help support the local coastguard. The completion is held on the 29th 30th and 31st of August this year and is an excellent weekend for the family. You don’t even have to fish to win, as a huge majority of prizes are given away by lucky draws including the major first prize of a new car and second price a boat package.
