Report 23/06/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Jun 23, 2014 12:02 pm

What a weekend we had! In close the water is still slightly murky leaving the long awaited schoolies out wider. With the weather we are having though you could take a bath tub to New Zealand. There were good reports of trout coming in from the close islands and good spannos from Barron were caught on lures as well.

The river is producing salmon like I haven’t seen in years. For all you land based fisherman, now are the perfect tides to get amongst them. There are plenty of herring around and if you have the capacity to gather some the rewards will be great. The salmon have been most active around the top of the early night tide. The best rig I can advise on from the land is a paternoster rig. You can view an illustration of a paternoster rig by clicking here. When you have a gripper sinker attached it should be enough to stop the flow pushing your rig upstream.

There will be big tides this weekend with the new moon which will obviously mean lots of run. If you’re fishing out of a boat, use a running ball sinker rig with the lightest sinker as possible. You want it only just enough to keep it below the waterline.

Another noteworthy mention is the crabs that are still abundant. The port and Coorooman have still been producing great numbers, but the best part is they are chockers still. Every crab I caught over the weekend was full with no fat, which is a really good sign on how healthy the river is. Next weekend is looking perfect at the moment and my advice is if the water cleans up a bit in close, to target Corts, forty acre or Iron pot to get amongst some of the schoolies. If you would like some photos posted send them through to fishingcq@hotmail.com until next time good luck and happy fishing.

TheTight Lines Fishing Classic is held in Yeppoon annually and has started the early bird entries. Get your entries in online or at a participating venues and help support the local coastguard. The completion is held on the 29th 30th and 31st of August this year and is an excellent weekend for the family. You don’t even have to fish to win, as a huge majority of prizes are given away by lucky draws including the major first prize of a new car and second price a boat package.
