Weekly Report 21 Nov 11

With the warmer weather upon us, the fishing in the Southern Downs is excellent at the moment. All of the stocked impoundments are producing quality fish. Leslie Dam is fishing very consistently, with good sized Yellow Belly being landed all over the dam on live shrimps and worms as well as lures. Small bibbed lures of between 60-70mm in length, such as Warlocks, are well worth a try. There has also been some nice Murray Cod falling to Spinnerbaits up near the Black Boys.

Some land based anglers have been trying their luck at Connelly. They have been fishing the points with success. You will need to find a position where the weed isn’t too thick. Most of the fish at Connelly are falling to live bait. The local river systems to the south of Warwick are fishing quite well. One local angler caught and released some nice Murray Cod, up to 25 pound, on a recent overnight trip. All these fish fell to a Black and Red 5/8 Bassman Spinnerbait.

The local Bass dams to the east of Warwick are certainly worth the drive. The Bass at Moogerah are the best they have been in years. There have been some nice fish landed recently, over 40cm, all over the dam. Moogerah is a very busy dam in the summer months so make sure all of your safety equipment is in order as on occasions the Water Police will be there to inspect your gear. You have to remember that they are only doing their job. The lures of choice at Moogerah and Maroon are Jackalls, Blades and Spinnerbaits. I know it is close to the same thing every month and you might say “how many Jackalls have these fish seen”, but they work and they work very well. If you are in the local area, make sure you call in to Warwick Outdoors and Sports and say g’day to John and Wayne - for expert advice on all your fishing (from kids combo to tournament rigs), boating, hunting and camping requirements.
