Report 21/7/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jul 21, 2017 9:53 am

July is a great time to be fishing on Moreton Bay with all of the winter species on the bite. Over the past couple of week’s the Snapper have come on the bite in the Bay and off shore. Some of the hot spots in the Bay have been the Rous ledge and the Myora light, the best baits have been Yellowtail Pike, Squid and Pilchards with the Mullet run on the beach coming to an end it is still worth having fresh Mullet fillet on board as well if you are heading off shore.

Middle reef has been fishing well for Snapper up to 6kg and Spangled Emperor. The better quality Snapper in Moreton Bay have been caught in the evening or early morning - the best baits have been Banana Prawn, live Squid and Whiting.

Quality hooks are essential when fishing for lager Snapper with the Mustad Big Gun range being very popular for dead baits and the Hoodlum range for live baits.

Some quality Diver Whiting have been caught on the Chain banks and Rous channel, best baits have been Cured Beach Worms, Live Blood Worms and Prawns (the prawns should be cut into strips). The pick of the hooks for a single hook rig have been the Mustad Big Mouth and the Blood Worm long shank, a paternoster rig is common when fishing for Whiting the VMC rigs are excellent.

The school Mackerel are still in good numbers and should move south as the weather gets cooler. The best rig is a paravane and a size 3 Makka spoon. Run the spoon on a 5m leader and troll with the boat just in gear for the best results.

Squid have been in good numbers on the weed banks in the Bay and off the foreshores and jetties. A couple of spots have been the esplanade at Manly and the jetty at Wellington point, the Yamashita jigs have been working well in these areas at night.

Hi Diemer, I post these reports on behalf of the Mossops team, who don't monitor the bulletin boards. If you give them a call though I'm sure they'll be happy to help you out.
