Good quality summer whiting are being taken from the southern beaches but no big numbers as yet, it may be a week or two before the main bunch arrive. They are best from Woody Bay, opposite Koolamara, from Red Beach, Buckley’s Hole and opposite Cornets. There have been some good winter whiting around the Cockle Banks and also a few with the summer whiting. There have been a big school of mac tuna rampaging through the passage over the past week and one big fish was taken from the Jetty. How long they will hang around is anybody’s guess.

There are good numbers of mullet in the passage so that indicates that the bait fish are improving. There are lots of flathead around at the moment and are generally with the whiting. However try around Red Beach, Buckley’s Hole, opposite Cornets, Sylvain Beach sand flats, from under the bridge and from Sandstone Point. These flathead are very good fish with lots of oversize fish around so make sure you release the over 70cm fish with care. There are few mulloway still around and the bridge area is a good spot to try. There have been a few mangrove Jack around so the creek mouths and canals are the go for them.

Still some snapper coming from the Ripples. There have been reports of a very large bull shark around the shallows in the passage so be careful while fishing these waters. The mud crabs are on the go in the passage at the moment and the creek mouths, Ningi Creek, and the mangroves are the go for them. The offshore fishing is pretty good with some spotted mackerel, a few good snapper around Tangalooma, as well as some Kingfish ,long tail tuna around Hutchies.
