Weekly Report 3 Oct 12 - John Doohan

We are at present getting a taste of a bit of summer weather. The only trouble is that the hot wind is coming from the North West and that’s not a very productive wind for fishing in all the years I have been at it. It seems as though there are a few summer fish around at the moment and over the next few weeks we should get a pretty good influx of our summer species. After a bit of a run a week or so back the crab’s have decided that things were not to their liking just yet so have gone back to bed. However, if this present heat continues for any length of time they will be out and about in good numbers again. The summer whiting are starting to show up in a lot better numbers and their quality is very good at present. So worth while getting after a few before they get hammered.

There are still a few Jew around and are coming from the creeks around Donnybrook and Beachmere. The winter whiting are around in good numbers but have moved into Deception Bay recently. The flathead are going pretty well and they are right through the passage at the moment with some nice fish among them. A few bream are in the canals around Bribie, also from the Beachmere area and are coming from the creek mouths and weed beds around Donnybrook. A few school mackerel are coming from the Shipping Channel and the odd good quality cobia. The outside reefs are a bit slow at the moment. Inside the passage it could be worthwhile looking for a couple of snapper around the Ripples and from the ledges around Mission Point.
