Report 04/07/14

That recent cold front has definitely mixed a few things up.

The Tailor are biting on the open beaches along the Gold Coast South Stradbroke Island. These Tailor are feeding on bait that is being pushed up along the beaches so they are in fairly close. If fishing for them off the beach look for the deeper gutters and focus on the entry points to them. The Tailor will sit at these points and wait for bait to get washed in. Pilchards are the most popular bait for Tailor and rigged on a set of ganged hooks they are very successful. Lures will also work and a few anglers are targeting them on metal slugs or surface lures like the Duel Adagios.

If you want to get out in the boat this weekend maybe a trip down to the Jumpinpin area might be an option. The bream are going off down the Pin at the moment and are schooling in the deeper waters at low tide and moving up onto the flats at high tide. The bream in the deeper waters can be targeted using soft plastics or hopping blades like the Ecogear ZX blades. Small baits of anchovies will also catch bream but will also lead to catching unwanted bi-catch.
The shallow water bream are best targeted using surface lures like the OSP Bent Minnow or small poppers like the Rebel Pop-R. Long casts are needed when casting at these bream as they can often spook easily if they see or hear your boat.

Winvenhoe Dam is still the most consistent of the dams of late. Bass and Yellowbelly are being caught schooling up along the old river bed or near Billy's Bay. A sounder is needed but once the fish are found casting deep diving crank baits or bibless lures like the Jackall Tn60s or Ecogear blades will do the damage. Due to Wivenhoe being restricted to 6knots its always a good idea to have a lure in the water and troll between your destinations or while your trying to locate schools. Proven trolling lures are the Smak Golden Child or OSP Power Dunks.

Hope everyone can get out there this weekend

Matt
