Report 18/6/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Jun 18, 2015 12:07 pm

Anyone planning on heading out over this weekend?
Reports of squire and mixed reefies are coming from Mud Island and Harry Atkinsons reef. Baits of pilchards are scoring good results as they will appeal to a wide range of fish species. If you want to target snapper or other reef species on lures try soft plastics like the gulp range or Keitechs. These are heavily scented and will work in low light periods or in deep water.

Micro jigs are going off at the moment too. The West Peel Reefs are a great place to try them out with some quality Jew fish and snapper coming from there recently. Other good spots to give jigging a go is the Gold Coast sea way or the deeper waters of the Pin. Stand out jigs would have to be the SHIMANO sniper jigs in both slow and fast fall and the Storm Gomoku jigs.
Watch out though as tailor and mackerel love jigs and love to borrow them as lip jewellery.

Bass are still being caught in the dams and Moogerah and Maroon would have to be the pick of them at the moment. Moogerah bass have schooled up and a boat with a sounded will help you find them. Once found vertical presentations like Jackall Tn60s or Ecogear ZX blades will work. Soft plastics like the 3.5inch Keitechs or Ecogear power shads are notching up some good catches. Deep fly fishing is also doing a lot of damage if you want to persist with the wand waving over winter.
Maroon Dam is a little different as the bass are still around the edge and are being caught on jerkbaits like the Rapala X Raps in the 7cm model. Surface lures will also work year round and the Mimix frogs are a realistic presentation that's sure to get the bass's attention.

Hope you can get out over the weekend.
Matthew Osley.
