Report 3/7/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Jul 03, 2015 12:05 pm

Finally the weather gods are smiling on us this weekend and into next week and with so many angling options at the moment it’s a great time to get out this weekend for a fish.

The tailor are on the move at the moment and are being caught in good numbers off the exposed beaches. Main beach and Narrow Neck down the Gold Coast are great starting points and due to the easy access to these areas they are very popular. Pilchards and smaller metal lures like the Spanid Raiders are popular methods to target tailor at the moment. If using pilchards try to reduce the weight of the sinker as this seems to be getting more attention. If you are taking the kids with you a lighter set up and allow them to catch bream, dart and whiting which are in good numbers in the same gutters.

The inner bay islands like Mud and Peel are producing quality catches of squire, sweet lip and even squid. Soft plastics are my personal favourite technique for targeting snapper as it allows you to move easily and cover more ground. However baits of squid or prawns lightly weighted can be highly effective. If you want to give soft plastics a go, check out the range by Keitech as they are heavily scented and have a great action. The biggest tip I could recommend is go the lightest jig head possible to fish the area you choose. This will allow your plastic to have a slower sink rate and will often result in the plastic being eaten on the drop.

During the cooler months many people forget about the fresh water but there are bass still willing to play in the upper reaches of the rivers around the area. Kayaks are a great way to explore these rivers and kids love getting out there and paddling around even if the fishing is slow. On a recent trip up the Brisbane river I found the bass and yellowbelly were responding to slow rolling deep diving lures like the Oar-Gee Wee Woop or Jackall Geronimo. If you want to use baits, worms or prawns will work cast under a float near snags like logs or rocky areas.

Remember it is Closed season on bass at the moment and they can not be targeted or kept from tidal waters and must be released straight away if accidentally caught.

Hope you can get out over the weekend.
Matthew Osley.
