Report 6/3/18

Post by subeditor » Tue Mar 06, 2018 11:12 am

It’s great to see the sunshine this week after all the rain we copped last Friday and Saturday morning. Once the fresh water starts to clear, we should see some great fishing over the next couple of weeks, that’s the benefits of a good dose of rain to clean out the system. Let’s have a look at some options.

After a good flush out combined with a full moon with big tides due Friday, chasing a feed of Mud Crabs and Prawns will be a great option. Our Houseboat customers did well making the most of the flush out getting stuck in to some quality Mud Crabs this week. Our customers were pretty well spread out this week throughout the area and all found a feed. Some good spots were the mouth of the Logan River, Canaipa Passage, Kouryabba, Western side of Russell Island, Jacobs Well, Tipplers Passage, The Never Fail Islands, Aldershots Western Side, Brown Island, Coomera River North and South Arms and Pimpama River. Whole mullet are great bait.
We’ve had reports of Prawns being caught around Macleay Island, Karragarra Island and Russell Island. After the rain, it’s just a matter of going out and checking all the normal spots until you find the Prawns. Best to keep an eye out for other boats casting nets and also check out some of the local facebook pages for a few clues on what’s been happening and where. We still have a couple of 12ft Top Pocket PRO THROW cast nets in stock, they are a fantastic quality net for a very reasonable price.

With all the fresh run off in the system, fishing close to the Pin Bar or Gold Coast Seaway ocean entrances on the incoming tide will give you the best opportunity to find fish. It will be a real mixed bag sometimes you just never know what may show up. The conditions should produce Jew Fish, Trevally, Tailor, Bream, Squire, Flathead, a few Grassy Sweetlips and Tusk Fish have also been caught. With big tides due over the weekend fishing a couple hours either side of a tide change is recommended.

With the weather forecast looking good it will be worth heading out to chase both Spanish and Spottie Mackerel. Try looking around the bait reef off the Seaway, 12, 18, and 24 fathoms east of the Seaway and also South on Mermaid, Palm Beach and the Gravel Patch. A mixture of trolling diving lures, skirted lures, throwing metal slugs, live baits on the surface and down rigger will work depending on what depth the fish are feeding at. For Spottie’s you can anchor up on the bait, start a good burley trail and float half pillie’s and also throw metal slugs to attract the fish.

Hope you all had a good weekend and got out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.
