Report 12/2/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Feb 12, 2016 1:11 pm

The S/SE wind has been persistent on the Gold Coast this week limiting fishing to more sheltered areas. At least we have seen plenty of sunshine, let’s have a look at what’s been happening.
The Gold Coast Seaway has been a nice option out of the wind, good numbers of Trevally and Jew Fish have been caught by drifting from the North Wall to the pipeline on the run in tide. Live baits like pike, mullet and herring have been producing quality fish. Working plastics and micro jigs has also worked well. Good numbers of Bream have also been caught off the pipeline and the rock walls.
After a few recent showers of rain we have seen a bit of Prawning action around the Logan River and Jacobs Well, we should start to see better numbers of Prawns during February and into March.
A bit of rain has made the Mud Crabs more active, some nice catches have been reported this week with a few full rusty crabs being caught. The Coomera River, Pimpama River, Logan River, Cabbage Tree Point, Jacobs Well, Canaipa Passage, The Neverfail Islands, Brown Island and Paradise Point have all crabbed well.
Quality Whiting have been active this week with customers finding a nice feed. Some good spots are the North Arm of the Coomera River, Crab Island, Wave Break Island, Marine Stadium, Jacobs Well, Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage, North Bedrooms and the Logan River. Yabbies and Worms are great bait. I recommend using a small size 6 baitholder hook, a long 6lb fluro carbon leader matched with a size 3 or 4 ball sinker.
Reports of Mangrove Jack being active after the cool change is good news, they will normally slow down when the Southerly starts and the air temp cools a bit. Plastics, Hard Body’s or live bait will temp the bruisers.
Offshore fishing has been a bit quiet due to the wind, hopefully next week the wind is tipped to ease and you will be able to head out to the reefs for a look.
At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see strong S/SE winds Friday and Saturday, by Sunday the winds will ease to light to moderate making it the pick of the days to hit the water.
If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au Good luck with the Fishing. Brett
