Report 8/7/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Jul 08, 2016 10:38 am

I’m pretty sure that last weekend was the best 2 days of winter weather we’ve had on the Gold Coast for a long time, warm, sunny and almost zero wind made spending time on the water a pleasure. With good conditions on offer plenty of fishing was done both inshore and offshore. During the week we have seen the return of the cold westerly winds making surf fishing a great option.
With very little swell around and light or westerly winds Customers have reported fishing the Surf Beaches of the Gold Coast and South Stradbroke Island has been worth a go. Some nice Tailor are showing up for the early risers and also fishing from late afternoon into the evening. With the new moon on Monday making the beach darker at night more fish have been moving into the gutters on the evening high tides this week. Tailor are fun to catch, put up a good fight and are great to eat when fresh. You can try casting and retrieving metal slugs during daylight hours, I prefer to fish baits at night like whole WA Pilchards, Garfish and Mullet Fillet on 3 gang hooks, a long mono trace and about 5-8 ball sinker depending on the sweep in the gutter. You will get more bites on mono trace but you may lose a fish or two to bite offs, if the fish are thick change to a long black wire trace. Fishing the gutters during day time with Yabbies, Pippies and Worms has produced a good mixed bag of Dart, Whiting, Bream, Tarwine and Flathead, this is a great way to introduce the kids into beach fishing and fun teaching them how to collect bait.
Customers reported some nice fish coming off the local reefs east of the Seaway and Jumpinpin over the weekend and during the week. Quality Snapper are moving in as winter sets in, we has also seen some nice Moses, Tusk Fish, Maori Cod, Jewfish, Trag, Cobia and Spangled Emperor from the 18, 24 & 36 fathom line. Out wider on the 50’s nice Pearl Perch, Snapper, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Samson and Amberjack have been caught.
Some very nice Bream have been caught his week, good average size fish are getting more common as the water cools down as we move closer to spawning time. Try Tiger Mullet Channel, Short Island Huts, Crusoe Island, Cobby Passage, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Dux, Coomera River, Paradise Point, Wave Break Island and the Gold Coast Seaway. Best baits are Prawns, Mullet Gut, White Pilchards, WA pilchard pieces and Yabbies re all good bait. Keeping a trail of burly pellets going is the key to keeping the school of Bream on the chew.
Flathead have been hitting soft plastics, vibes, blades and baits this week around Crab Island, Middle banks opposite Sovereign Island, Brown Island, Aldershots, Coomera River, Neverfail Islands, Green Bank, through Tiger Mullet Channel, Kalinga Bank, Logan River and Jacobs Well.

At the time of writing my report the weekend is looking good with moderate S/SW winds on Saturday and Sunday. We will see the wind tend light to moderate N/NW from Monday and plenty of sunshine on the way.
