Report 14/10/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Oct 14, 2016 10:40 am

It’s been pretty windy on the Gold Coast this week making finding a weather window between the constant Northerly and South Easterly wind changes a bit challenging. While the wind is around the estuaries and river have been the best option. The weekend is looking ok at this stage for getting out amongst some action.
Customers that have found a few spot’s to hide out of the wind this week have managed a feed of Bream and Whiting in the rivers. Try the North and South arm of the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Logan River, Tiger Mullet Channel and Jacobs Well for a feed. Whiting will bite best on Worms and Yabbies, Bream will take Worms, Yabbies, White Pilchards, Prawns, Mullet Gut and Mullet Fillet.

If you’re looking to target Flathead I’d recommend locating the bait schools and fishing the Jumpinpin Bar entrance in the deeper water, Kalinga Bank, Crusoe Island, Green Bank, Bedrooms and Canaipa Passage and the Gold Coast Seaway on the incoming tide depending on wind direction. You will still find nice Flathead on most sandbanks, creek mouths and gutters throughout the Broadwater. Some more good spots to try are Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Tipplers Passage, Pimpama River, Coomera River, Crab Island, Wave Break Island, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay and Labrador beaches. The new Zerek Fish Trap soft vibes are a great choice, Zman Soft Plastics, TT Metal Blades and trolling Zerek Tango Shads are all worth a try depending on the weed situation. Live Yabbies, White Pilchards, WA Pilchards and Mullet Fillet are good baits to use on the drift.
A few locals have started to look for a Mangrove Jack in the Coomera River this week, they are targeting the structure around Gold Coast City Marina, Coomera Highway & Train Bridge, jetty’s and rock walls in the river in the search for a Red Bruiser. Zman 3” & 4” minnows in Pearl & Red Bine seem to be a favourite choice in the river. Just keep on casting and varying your retrieve and eventually you will be rewarded. Bycatch like Estuary Cod and Trevally will be a bonus whilst searching for a Jack.
With the full moon on the way Monday setting some crab pots to chase a feed of Sand Crabs will be worth a go. Target the edges of the main channels around the Broadwater and Jumpinpin, Sandies like to move through the bit deeper water with the extra tidal flow. It’s also worth finding some sandbanks with a bit of weed and set the pots on the drop-offs on the run out tide. Try the Coomera River, Brown Island, Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well, Logan River and Canaipa for a Mud Crab or two.
