Report 16/3/17

Post by subeditor » Thu Mar 16, 2017 3:27 pm

It looks like the dry spell has finally come to an end on the Gold Coast this week with some good falls of long overdue rain. The rain will do wonders for the system giving the rivers and creeks a good flush out. Let’s have a look at what’s been biting and options over the weekend.
We have finally had some good rain this week, that’s good news for our local systems on the Gold Coast giving the rivers and creeks a nice flush out. The flush out should get the Mud Crabs on the move and also flush out heaps of bait fish into the main systems.
After the rain, fishing the river mouths where they enter the main systems is a great spot to find predators waiting for the bait to be washed out, especially on the run out tide you will see a clear tide line between the fresh and salt water, this a good spot to concentrate your efforts. Using bait or lures will do the job, you should find Trevally, Jew Fish, Tailor, Tarpon even Flathead just to name a few species that will follow the bait around.
Our Houseboat customers scored some nice Mud Crabs this week, try to get the pots in over the weekend to take advantage of the flush out. The Coomera River, Pimpama River, Brown Island, The Never Fails, Aldershots, Tipplers Passage, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Canaipa Passage, and Tiger Mullet Channel should all produce a feed of Crabs.

Good luck to all the anglers fishing the Pirtek Fishing Challenge on Sunday 19/3/17, the rain will make it a bit harder to find fish but I’m sure you all have some special spots to rely on. It’s a fantastic comp that suits all anglers including families and children with lots of great prizes up for grabs. The best target species for the Gold Coast will be Flathead and Whiting. Proceeds of the comp go towards Prostate Cancer Research. https://pirtekfishingchallenge.com.au/
Customers scored some quality Spanish Mackerel last weekend, it’s was nice to see some good sized fish landed off the Gold Coast. Keep an eye out for birds feeding on bait schools, fish splashing on the surface whilst feeding and also bait schools on the sounder in case the fish are feeding down deep. If the fish are deep, rig a small piece of wire onto a large metal slug and vertical jig this normally fires the fish and results in a bite. Normal methods like trolling hard body lures, skirts, live bait & dead bait will all work depending on how the fish are feeding. If you anchor up on the bait keep a good burley trail going and cast out metal slugs to entice the fish in to feed.
