Report 31/8/17

Post by subeditor » Thu Aug 31, 2017 3:29 pm

As we say goodbye to Winter on the Gold Coast and hello to Spring the week has been pretty nice with our Houseboat customers making the most of the conditions. Friday will be busy on the water for the Gold Coast Show day public holiday with a Sunny day on the way, let’s have a look at what’s been on the chew.

I was lucky enough to head out on the water last Sunday with the kids, the weather wasn’t quite as good as the forecast with the N/NW kicking in early and the wind against the tide but it was great to out for a look. We were mainly targeting Flathead with soft plastics but any species are more than welcome to have a crack at our lures, that’s the most exciting part of fishing as you never know what might show up. We mainly fished from the Never Fail Islands down to the Gold Coast Seaway targeting the tops of the sandbanks on the high tide casting Zman Streaks 3.75” and Curly tails 4” rigged on TT finesse 1/4 & 3/8 3/0 jig heads. We ended up with 15 Flathead, a few Tailor, Bream, Tarwine and an elbow slapping 38cm Whiting which was the surprise catch of the day.

Flathead will be on the chew in good numbers throughout September, we did notice a lot more snot weed moving in which makes trolling hard body lures a bit of a mission in some areas. Some spots to try your luck around the Pin are the Bar entrance, Bedrooms, Green and Gold Bank, Tiger Mullet Channel, Kalinga Bank, Eden Island, Jacobs Well and Canapia Passage. In Southern end of the Broadwater try Marine Stadium, Middle Banks opposite the Broadwater Parklands, Wave Break Island, Paradise Point, Brown Island and the Aldershots depending on boat traffic.

Customers have scored a few Tailor this week around the Pin Bar entrance on the incoming tide, keep a look out for the birds working the schools of fish actively feeding. Once you locate the fish try throwing metal slugs, surface poppers, troll hard body lures or drift Whole WA pilchards will also do the job to entice a bite. Tailor have been pretty wide spread throughout the Pin and Broadwater for the past few weeks chasing the schools of White Pilchards around the tops of sandbanks on high tide and also in the main channels and estuary and river systems. We have lost plenty of jig heads while chasing Flathead to the razor tooth gang.

Bream are still being caught throughout the Broadwater and Jumpinpin, our customers have caught a nice feed. Good spots to try are Cobby Passage, Short Island, Logan River, Power Lines, Rocky point, Tiger Mullet Channel, Dux, Coomera River including the Highway Bridge, Sanctuary Cove Rock Walls and Santa Barbara Boat Ramp, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay Canal mouths, The Gold Coast Seaway and Sundale Bridge. Just remember to keep a steady flow of burley pellets on the go to keep the fish in feed mode. Best baits are Mullet Gut, Mullet Fillet, Prawns, White Pilchards, Squid Strips, WA Pilchard Pieces and Yabbies.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.
