Report 6/10/17

Post by subeditor » Fri Oct 06, 2017 1:16 pm

A mixed bag of weather over the long weekend and this week has also seen a good mixture of species on offer for customers trying their luck on the Gold Coast. Let’s see what’s been happening.

The Gold Coast Sports Fishing Club Flathead Classic was a big success again this year seeing record numbers of teams and anglers including juniors braving the weather conditions and honing their skills to chase Flathead on lures on the Gold Coast. This year’s comp saw 5669 Flathead caught and released with 276 teams totalling 670 anglers out enjoying the fantastic sport of fishing. Well done to everyone that organized the event and congratulations to all the anglers that competed.

It’s been so long we almost forgot what rain was like on the Gold Coast. We managed to get a few good showers over the weekend and a bit during the week at night to get a bit of much needed fresh water into the system. It’s amazing the difference a bit on rain has on the fishing and especially the Mud Crabbing. Our Houseboat customers that headed out this week we lucky to be the first to drop the crab pots in after the rain and did quite well picking up a good feed of Mud Crabs that were active after the fresh water flush. The mouths of feeder creek around the Pin area produced a good feed, try looking around Tiger Mullet Channel, Kangaroo Island, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Cobby Passage and the Logan River. Locals did well in the Coomera River, Tipplers Passage, Pimpama River and around Brown Island.

A weather window over the weekend saw customers sneak out offshore for a look, no swell and light winds made a great day to chase a feed. The 24 & 18 fathom reefs produced a good feed of Snapper on bait and plastics. A few Mac Tuna have been caught along with Tailor, Trag, Moses and Tusk Fish. My biggest tip if you are anchoring is to keep a good burley trail going and it will pay off with some good fish in the end.

I’ve noticed a few local anglers have started to look for a Mangrove Jack in the Coomera River this week, they are targeting the structure around Gold Coast City Marina, Coomera Highway & Train Bridge, jetty’s and rock walls in the river in the search for a Red Bruiser. Zman 3” & 4” minnows in Pearl White & Red Calico Candy seem to be a favourite choice in the river. Just keep on casting and varying your retrieve and eventually you will be rewarded. Bycatch like Estuary Cod and Trevally will be a bonus whilst searching for a Jack.

Good quality Whiting have been caught at the Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Coomera River South and North arms, Paradise Point and Labrador. Yabbies and Worms are the best bait to chase a tasty feed.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.
