Report 18/1/18

Post by subeditor » Thu Jan 18, 2018 12:35 pm

After a windy start to the week it’s nice to finally see the South Easterly winds start to ease and hopefully by the weekend the swell would have dropped enough to sneak offshore for a look. Fishing the sheltered waters of Broadwater and Jumpinpin has been the best bet to find a few fish and crabs this week.

Hiding out of the wind was the key to success, with our Houseboat customers managing to score a feed of Whiting this week. A few good spots include the North and South Arms of the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Tiger Mullet Channel, Green Bank, Eden Island, Canaipa Passage and the Logan River. All produced a few nice Whiting on worms and yabbies. The best rig to use is a nice long trace of 6lb fluro carbon leader, depending on tidal flow, a size 4 ball sinker is fairly standard and a size 6 bait holder hook. Best tip is to let the fish hook themselves rather than pulling the bait out of the whiting’s mouth.

We’ve had reports of Bream caught up the western end of Tiger Mullet Channel behind Kangaroo Island, this is a good spot when the tidal flow is stronger than normal. Some other good spots are Gold Bank, Green Bank, Logan River, Canaipa Passage, Bedrooms, Tipplers Passage, Coomera River, Paradise Point, Crab Island Labrador and Wave Break Island. Prawns, White Pilchards, Mullet Fillet and Yabbies are the best bait.
Customers have scored some good catches of Mud Crabs this week, a bit more rain will see consistent catches as the month progresses. Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Cobby Passage, Tiger Mullet Channel, the Neverfail Islands and the Coomera River have been the best spots. Whole Mullet or fish frames are a favourite. Don’t forget to have your Crab pot and float clearly marked or Fisheries will confiscate your gear. Crab ID kits are available from $4.50 for 5 tags. https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/fisheries/re ... d-lobsters

Flathead are worth targeting on soft plastics, soft vibes metal blades. You could also try trolling small bibbed lures around the edges of Sandbanks on the run out tide, creek Mouths and tops of sandbanks towards high tide. Work the area with your lures until you get a fish or a bite then concentrate on that area as there is normally a few fish to be found.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.

At the time of writing my report the we will see moderate S/SE winds on Saturday be easing on Sunday back to light to moderate S/SE winds. Keep an eye on the swell if you are considering heading offshore especially on the run out tide on the bar entrances. Just make sure you have the most up to date weather forecast before heading out on the water.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au Good luck with the Fishing.
