Report 3/9/15

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Sep 03, 2015 1:13 pm

With winter making way for spring this week more fish are awakening from their cold season slumber & it won’t be long now before we’re back into the full summer fishing swing.

Staff member Matt Armistead has been quite successful fishing the surface schools of salmon and rat kings in the harbour this week using soft plastics and metal slugs. Positioning the boat up school & casting the smaller lures in front of the approaching fish worked well on the surface action while deep trolled hard body divers did the job when the fish were down. This is quite active fishing chasing schools in the boat yet the relaxed approach was also a winner, by casting bigger plastics in amongst the wharves and pylons flathead, bream and trevally were hooked.

If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing and with our bays firing at the moment it’s certainly worth grabbing some beach worms and finding an edge to fish from, whiting and flathead are holding on most of the deeper drop offs like Clontarf, around the Spit marina and Balmoral Wharf.

The offshore snapper bite is kicking in with some good reports from Long Reef and plenty of smaller kings and trevally are around, try fishing from the 10-20 metre mark with lightly weighted baits of pilchard and squid & don’t be too surprised if you see a few sharks as there have been some big ones spotted this week.
